Small Area Health Insurance Estimates (SAHIE)

Small area, or county level, estimates of health insurance coverage are not readily available through federal data sets.  The traditional sample design for these surveys has traditionally not been adequate to make county-level estimates.

The U.S. Census Bureau has started an experimental program to measure county-level (small area) estimates of health insurance coverage.  Their Small Area Health Insurance Estimates (SAHIE) program provides model-based estimates of health insurance coverage for counties and states.  They have developed the following experimental estimates for counties and states for 2000:

  •  Total population with and without health insurance coverage
  • Children under age 18 with and without health insurance coverage

The SAHIE program is also conducting research on production of estimates for other age groups and demographic characteristics.
